Tigers Pictures Facts - Home Range
The Tigers' original home was China but later these animals moved to the north into Siberia, to the west along the Caspian Sea, into India, Burma and to Sumatra, Java and Bali. Unfortunately due to many factors, these animals in many areas have become completely extinct. They can only be found nowadays in Russia.
Tigers Pictures Facts - Types of the Tigers
There are eight subspecies of tiger cats that are known to us, but nowadays only five still exist; three of them are already extinct. There are five tiger subspecies that can be found on our planet nowadays including the following types: Siberian or Amur Tiger, Bengal or Indian Tiger, Indochinese Tiger, South China Tiger and Sumatran Tiger.
Siberian or Amur Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) - is the largest of the tiger subspecies. The color of the coat of theses tigers is the palest orange coat and there are fewer stripes on it. There are about 505 representatives of this type remaining in the wild. These animals eat large preys such as water buffalo.
Bengal or Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) - it is a powerful animal with very distinct markings. These cats breed at any time of the year. This species is also called the white tiger. There are about 2500 Bengal tigers that are left in the wild. The majority of its food includes small critters and deer.
Indochinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) There are 1,050 - 1,750 tigers that are left in the wild. There are 60 of these living in zoos. They eat wild pigs and cattle. The distribution of these tigers is centered in Thailand and Myanmar, southern China, Laos, and Vietnam. South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) There are 48 tigers that live in 19 South China zoos. As these tigers were thought to be pests, they were almost eliminated and now there are only a few of them left. They like to eat chicken. Nowadays, South China tigers are endangered more than all of the other subspecies. There are about 30-80 tigers that are found in the wild. Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) - is also known as the smallest tiger of all the tiger types; also as the fruit eater. The Sumatran tiger eats watermelon, frogs and small critters. These animals are found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. There are about 400-500 tigers that are believed to exist in the wild primarily within the islands' national parks. About 235 of Sumatran Tigers live in zoos.
So, only five subspecies that survived nowadays^: the Amur (Siberian), South China, Indo-Chinese, Bengal, and Sumatran tigers are scarce in the wild. All living kinds of Tigers are listed as endangered and are receiving protection to avert the fate of the three subspecies of Tigers that are now extinct. For almost 70 years the Bali, the Javan and the Caspian tigers have been extinct, never to
be seen again.
