The Tigers are on the verge of extinction today. A hundred years ago, India had an estimated tiger population of 40,000. Today, the total number of tigers in India is probably less than 3,000, while the world tiger population is said to be between 4,600 and 7,200.

Tigers Pictures Facts - Status

The tiger has been thought to be a pest and dangerous animal for a human; that's why it has been hunted and killed for centuries. People have always been afraid of this beautiful, graceful and powerful animal, so the tiger was poached, hunted and driven out of its habitat by human beings.

In the early days, hunting tigers was even a sport. Indian royalty would hunt several tigers in one day. These animals were also poached for their bones and skins that were used in traditional Chinese medicine. Drugs produced of tiger's bones were thought to be best cures from many different diseases.

Tigers Pictures Facts - Anti Facts

Although tigers were thought to be human-eaters, there are counter arguments that prove this animal does not kill humans unless he feels threatened and there is no room to escape. This animal is a thorough gentleman and is not a bloodthirsty killer. These animals kill only for food and only when hungry, they do not kill for fun.

Tigers Pictures Facts - Conservation Status

Tiger conservation of these animals is one of the main priorities of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). WWF played a major role in getting Project Tiger started in India, which was initiated by the Indian Government in 1973. India is now involved in a massive conservation effort covering over 30 national parks and sanctuaries.

Every year many animals are still killed on the planet for the sake of their skin and bones. Although in many countries hunting these tigers is prohibited, the black market still offers tigers' body parts. This practice of illegal hunting has caused three subspecies of Tigers to be extinct nowadays. The three extinct tiger species are: Javan Tiger, Bali Tiger, and Bearded Caspian Tiger.
